BOCA RATON – After having two consecutive statistically amazing seasons, Devin “Motor” Singletary looks to be dominant once again in 2018.
The FAU junior running back has been a huge contributor to the Owls offense since his freshman season.
In 12 games played as a freshman, Singletary had 152 rushing attempts for 1,021 yards and 12 touchdowns as he split time with FAU alum Gregory “Buddy” Howell, amongst others, at the position.
In his sophomore year, Singletary’s numbers shot up across the board, as he had 301 rushing attempts, 1,920 rushing yards and 32 rushing touchdowns. He led all FBS running backs in these key categories last year.
Singletary also graded out as one of the highest running backs returning to the college ranks at 92.6. In addition to that, the American Heritage (Delray Beach) alum was named the Conference USA Most Valuable Player this past season and he was mentioned as a player that deserved to be a candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
Heading into 2018, Owl Nation will be lobbying for Singletary to be a Heisman candidate once again. The Heisman Watch List was released last week, and he surprisingly left off it by the ESPN college football team of experts.
It’ll be very interesting to see if there’s any incentive for Singletary being left off the Heisman Watch List and Oklahoma running back Rodney Anderson actually making the initial one of this upcoming season.
The Owls (38 votes; AP Preseason national rankings poll) will be on the road to take on Oklahoma (No. 7; AP Preseason national ranking) in their first game of the season. It’s arguably the most important and highest-profile regular season to this point for the Boca Raton (Fla.) based college football program.
FAU has been playing with confidence since head coach Lane Kiffin’s inception last year. The emergence of former Palm Beach County high school football players such as Singletary (offense) and Jim Thorpe Watch List defensive back/incoming senior Jalen Young (defense) has a lot to do with the inspired play in their respective units.
All in all, the Owls will be a team to watch as they look to be the “Alabama of Florida” in 2018.
FAU will travel to Oklahoma for its season opener on Saturday, Sept. 1. It will be aired live on the FOX Network with a kickoff time set for 12 p.m.
