FAU’s defensive staff has made one thing clear: talent alone isn’t enough.
“We don’t just want good players — we want the right guys,” the defensive coach said. “Guys who love coming in, want to be coached hard, and keep getting better every day.” – Brett Dewhurst (Defensive Coordinator)
That mindset has become the foundation of FAU’s defense this spring, as players compete daily for roles in an increasingly competitive system. The coaching staff emphasized that building a winning defense starts with mentality. Players are expected to bring energy and push each other. Competition is everywhere, and it’s intentional. “It’s our job to replace them, and their job not to get replaced.” – Brett Dewhurst (Defensive Coordinator) The goal is to develop depth across the board, with multiple players capable of stepping into starting roles at any time.
Building the Secondary
A major focus has been on the defensive backs, where FAU is prioritizing versatility and balance. Rather than stacking the same type of player, the staff is mixing: Size and length, Speed and quickness, Instincts and ball skills.
“You can’t have the same piece everywhere. It’s like basketball — you need a mix.”
Tyson Rooks Interview:

One of the new additions to that unit is senior defensive back Tyson Rooks (#19). Rooks transferred in from Illinois with an existing relationship with the coaching staff, which made the transition smooth.
“That relationship made it comfortable,” Rooks said. “And it was the perfect time to come closer to home.” – Tyson Rooks (#19)
Rooks has also embraced the competitive edge within the roster, particularly the natural rivalry between players from different regions. “It’s definitely fun competing…. we all want to show what we can do.” That internal competition is helping elevate the level of play across the defense.
Fixing Last Year’s Weakness: Turnovers
One of the biggest points of emphasis this spring has been creating takeaways. After recording just eight turnovers last season, the coaching staff made it a priority across all practices and meetings. “Play the play before it happens,” Rooks said, describing the mindset being taught. The defense is focusing on: Anticipation, Ball awareness, Applying pressure on the quarterback. The coaching staff is even tracking “shots at the ball” during drills to reinforce the habit
As spring continues, FAU’s defense is coming together fast. Built on culture, competition, and leadership from players like Tyson Rooks, the Owls are shaping a unit ready to make noise this season.
