BELLE GLADE – It was quite obvious that Rashad Jackson was brimming with potential to be a successful head coach at Glades Central.

But given the Raiders recent history prior to the 2020 season, most expected Jackson’s rise to build over time.

For everyone’s benefit, Jackson exceeded expectations in more ways than one by leading Glades Central to a 5-1 final record in a shortened season.

This fact, along with several others, impressed the Lou Groza Awards voting committee in a big way. It was enough for Jackson to win the Lou Groza Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm.

Jackson’s honor was announced by Keiser head coach Doug Socha during the Lou Groza Awards virtual ceremony last night (Jan. 4) on www.lougrozaaward.com.

“God is good,” Jackson said. “First off I’m so thankful to be named the Coach of the Year. It feels so great to see your hard work and dedication be rewarded. To see our program back in the mix about all the great things, it’s a blessing.”

Glades Central demolished its four opponents in the regular season, as it outscored Palm Beach Central (41-0 in Week 1), Royal Palm Beach (46-6 in Week 2), Pahokee (38-0 in Week 3; Muck Bowl), and Park Vista (35-7 in Week 4) by a combined score of 160-13. By then, it was clear that the Raiders were head and shoulders over every other team in Palm Beach County.

A lot of Glades Central’s success came from how the players excitedly bought in to whatever Jackson poured into them, both individually and collectively.

“Everything started off in the offseason,” said senior kicker Jose Garcia, who won the Lou Groza Award as Placekicker of the Year in Palm Beach County.

“I just wanted to be the best kicker that I could be for my team,” Garcia continued. “I worked out two times a day with my dad and Coach Jackson. I really appreciate Coach Jackson for being one of the most powerful influencers for me. He guided me to the right path and showed me immense love to work out every day and get stronger.”

Glades Central senior defensive back Jacob Camacho shared similar sentiments about Jackson prior to the start of their 2020 season.

“I think he’s a great head coach,” Camacho said. “He’s getting us exposure, and I think he can change the program back to where it should be.”
