BELLE GLADE – When Keontey Fowler saw an opportunity to make a big play, he wasted no time in the process.

The Glades Central senior defensive back secured his MVP moment right as his team’s 6A-1A Gold first round playoff game against Booker T. Washington (Miami) approached the final buzzer. He was in the right position at the right time to seal the Raiders 16-13 home win over the Tornadoes with an interception.

Fowler spoke on how he made the best play of this past week, which catapulted him to become our MVP of Week 5.

“That play was Jacob Camacho, Kevontey Fowler, and Jaheim Humphries,” Keontey said of the play, which occurred with about 30 seconds left in the game.

“He (Humphries) told me, ‘Stay on your feet. No. 3 (Tornadoes senior quarterback Torrey Morrison) is athletic,” Keontey continued. “Knowing me, I’ll go up and hit. So what I did was I faked him. I faked him again. When he threw the ball up, I stayed on my feet. The ball came straight to me. I did what my coaches told me to do, and it was successfully done.”

Keontey (No. 3-ranked defensive back and No. 24 overall player in Palm Beach County) finished the game with six tackles, one pass breakup, and two interceptions in Glades Central’s three-point win over last year’s Class 4A state champion.

“I told the guys, ‘Listen. He’s gonna scramble and break the body. Stay on your guy. He’s gonna try to throw the ball in the window and jump the window,’” Glades Central head coach Rashad Jackson said of the game-ending play. “And that’s what Keontey did. He had a great game.”
