BOCA RATON – It was a tight race for the MVP of Week 6.
The votes came down to two St. John Paul II sophomore athletes in Ben Laurore (MVP of Week 2) and Matthew Wilson, who had great performances in last week’s 58-14 home win over Jupiter Christian.
In the end, Wilson edged Laurore for this week’s top individual honor.
“I just want to say thanks to my teammates on the field with me because without them, I wouldn’t be the MVP,” Wilson said. “And I also want to say thank you to my coaches for putting me in this position.”
Wilson’s night on Oct. 15 was a memorable, as he registered nine carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns. He added one reception for 13 yards.
Best play for Wilson?
“It was the first time I touched the ball,” he said. “I scored.”
Indeed, Wilson’s score was on a 23-yard run to the end zone. The 5-foot-8, 185-pound running back sped to his touchdown nearly untouched in the process.
“Matt is a heck of an athlete with his hard runs,” Laurore said. “I call him mini Marshawn Lynch (laughs).
He is just a great running back and he gets better each and every week.”
St. John Paul II junior wide receiver Jaylen Leggett, our Breakthrough Player of Week 6, chimed in.
“Matt is a great running back,” Leggett said. “Every game he goes hard on every play, and he’s only a sophomore. He is going to be an excellent running back in the future because he’s a hard work. He ran hard and physical against Jupiter Christian.”
Can Wilson do it again tomorrow night at St. Andrew’s? We will find out after the 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Oct. 23.
