Newman Sweeps the Series, Moves on to the Next Round of the FHSAA Playoffs

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Round Two of playoff action commenced tonight as Cardinal Newman hosted district rivals Benjamin. The two had met previously in the season just a couple of weeks ago to decide the district championship, Newman emerged victorious thanks to a clutch Max Redmond reception to give Newman the district championship.

After having the ball almost the entire 1st quarter, Newman got on the board first as Jalyin “JBo” Brown got through for a short rushing touchdown to put Newman out in front 7-0. Benjamin responded in the 2nd quarter with a field goal from Lilly White to shrink the lead down to 7-3. Newman would respond at the end of the half as Luke Warnock found Naeshaun Montgomery for a quick passing touchdown.

It was a fairly quiet 3rd quarter from both sides, with two minutes left in the quarter Benjamin notched in another field goal to keep the game close, Newman however sat comfortably at 14-6. Newman would ignite a late game rally as Brown got his 2nd rushing touchdown of the night pushing Newman up 21-6 as time expired in the 3rd. In the 4th, Newman officially put the game away as Jyron Hughley scored off a QB Keeper and extended the lead 28-6.

With this win, Newman officially holds a 2-0 record on Benjamin for the season. Newman will move on to face Chaminade-Madonna in a Black Friday matchup. Madonna comes off a dominant win over Avant Garde and will be looking to keep themselves at the top with another trip to States. Newman will be looking to pull off the underdog upset.
