NFL Draft 2020: Green Bay Packers select DE Jonathan Garvin

LAKE WORTH – It was a long wait for Jonathan Garvin.

Scouts projected the former Miami Hurricanes defensive end and Lake Worth product to get picked in Day 3 of the NFL Draft (April 25). They were right, as the Green Bay Packers selected him with the 242nd overall pick in the seventh round.

Garvin is the only Palm Beach County player to hear his name called in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, Palm Beach County’s No. 1 overall player from the 2017 class joined three fellow Hurricanes who got drafted earlier in Day 3: linebacker and Jacksonville-area native Shaquille Quartermann (Pick 140, 4th Round; Jacksonville Jaguars), running back DeeJay Dallas (Pick 144, 4th Round; Seattle Seahawks), and wide receiver K.J. Osborn (Pick 176, 5th Round; Minnesota Vikings).

Garvin ended his junior season at Miami with 37 total tackles, 9 tackles for loss and 5 sacks. The 6-foot-4, 263-pound edge rusher finished his Hurricanes career with 29 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks in three seasons, including a career-high 17 TFL’s as a sophomore in 2018.

He is the first Lake Worth alum to get drafted since James Looney, a defensive tackle who was picked by the Green Bay Packers as the 232nd overall pick in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Interestingly, both Garvin and Looney (defensive tackle) will be teammates on the Packers – at least for the time being.

SIDE NOTE: The Lake Worth Trojans now have at least three of their former high school football players in the NFL: Garvin (2017 alum), James Looney (2013 alum; played college football for California), and Joe Looney (2009 alum; played college football for Wake Forest; picked in fourth round of 2012 NFL Draft by San Francisco 49ers; now with Dallas Cowboys at centre).
