PAHOKEE – Atlantic took a win on the road against Pahokee to cement itself as the team to beat in Palm Beach County.
Pahokee athlete Deante Nelson would not make things easy for Atlantic, as he snagged one of his three interceptions in the first quarter. He would later capitalize on the turnover by catching a 99-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jason Campbell, which would give Pahokee an early lead.
The Eagles would score after recovering a muffed punt by the Blue Devils. Montahj Joseph scored a short run for the Eagles, which cut the lead to 8-7.
The Eagles would score again early in the second quarter on a pass from Kalani IIimaleota to Tyrese Blue. With the score and extra point, the Eagles took a 14-8 lead.
Another muffed punt would put the Eagles (3-0) in Pahokee territory. The Eagles offense would score on a short pass from IIimaleota to Javone Jackson with four minutes left in the second quarter to give them a 21-8 lead.
Pahokee (1-1) would answer with a wide receiver screen play from Campbell to the speedy Leroy Love, who raced down the sideline to close the gap to 21-15 with 1:44 left in the first half.
Atlantic would create separation before halftime with a touchdown pass from IIimaleota to Blue for his second touchdown of the night.
At halftime, Atlantic’s lead was 28-15.
Pahokee held Atlantic’s offense in check for most of the third quarter, as Nelson would come up with his second interception of the night and then catch his second touchdown pass with 45 seconds left.
With the score, Atlantic’s lead would be cut to 28-21.
Nelson would come up with his third interception at the beginning of the fourth, but the Blue Devils couldn’t capitalize. They mishandled a snap that gave the Eagles the ball in the Blue Devils’ red zone.
Atlantic would score one more time on a short run by Antoine Williams with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter. With the extra point, Atlantic’s lead would extend to 35-21, which would be the final score.
Blue provided some commentary on his performance against Pahokee.
“I’m just being humble,” Blue said. “I didnt score the first two games, so coach [T.J. Jackson] told me to come out and play my game. I ended up scoring two touchdowns.”
NOTES: No. 1 Atlantic will have a bye in Week 4 and remain in peak position when the next rankings come out on Monday. No. 2 Pahokee will play Cardinal Newman at home in Week 4 (Friday, Sept. 14; 6 p.m. kickoff).
