PORT ST. LUCIE – The fourth quarter is what really matters in this one.
Between Tradition Prep and Jupiter Christian, these two teams battled it out from start to finish. Neither team has a comfortable lead at any point tonight (Aug. 31) at South County Stadium.
With that said, let us go to the one defining play sequence which secured a history-making win for the home team.
Up 28-27 with less than seven minutes left in the game, Tradition Prep (1-0) forced Jupiter Christian (1-1) into a three-and-out near the end zone. For this particular play, the Eagles needed to make a decision on fourth down.
Punt or go for the first down?
The Eagles made their decisions to punt the ball to the Pirates.
On that ensuing special teams play, Tradition Prep junior defensive back Jaxon Bryant scooped up the short punt and raced past the opposition for a touchdown return.
As the Tradition Prep special teams got to the line of scrimmage, onlookers wanted to know if this unit was going to go for the extra point or two-point conversion.
The Pirates went for two.
They allowed senior athlete Keishwan Rivers to run the rock right down the middle for a two-point score.
At the 6:12 mark of the fourth quarter, the score was: Tradition Prep 36 – Jupiter Christian 27.
The nine-point scoring margin would hold all the way until the final buzzer.
How did that happen?
Tradition Prep stopped a potential Jupiter Christian rally via turnover on downs near its red zone with 4:20 left in the game.
After that, the home team would go on and run out almost the entire remaining clock – save for about 15 seconds.
The last play of the game was an offensive pass from Jupiter Christian that gained a lot of traction, but not enough to prevent Tradition Prep from sealing its program-defining victory.
Both teams quickly made it to the middle of the field for a sportsmanship moment after the final buzzer sounds. After that, Tradition Prep went on to celebrate the win in style.
