Palo Alto, CA.– The University of Miami Hurricanes football is BACK this week.
The Hurricanes open their 2026 quest for National glory on the West Coast, as Miami will face ACC foe Stanford Friday Night. It’s been an exciting off-season for Miami as ‘Canes fans counted down the moments until Week 1.
Initial thoughts on Stanford
Last Saturday afternoon, Stanford would down Hawaii 37-27 in a Week 0 bout, putting the Hurricanes on the clock. During the inaugural game of the Tavita Pritchard era, the Cardinal leaned on the ground game, as sophomore runningback Micah Ford had for 25 carries, 99 yards and 3 Stanford scores. Former Michigan transfer Davis Warren would lead the passing attack, going 22/34 in the air at 310 yards and one touchdown. Warren would activate his X factor late in the 4th when the Cards needed him most, going 5/5 for 58 yards and helping lead Stanford to their final TD of the evening.
Defensively, Stanford placed pressure early on the Rainbow Warriors, as QB Micah Alejado would record 51 attempts in the air, the second most in his career, for 272 yards and 2 TDs. The Cardinal defense stunned the Hawaii ground game, with DeVon Rice being the Warriors’ leading rusher with 35 yards, at a long of 10.
Film Breakdown
Let’s start with Stanford’s defense. What I noticed on the tape is the Card primarily run a 4-2-5 set, with their secondary dropping into a cover 3. The Card did a great job neutralizing the explosive Hawaii offense. The Warrior’s bread and butter came in quick game situation, as QB Micah Alejado did an incredible job of dishing and diving in the 2025 fall. Last season, Hawaii averaged 275.2 yards in the air per game (12th FBS) and 103.2 rushing yards per game. Stanford’s defense held the ‘Bows to under last season’s average in both categories.
In crunch time, Stanford’s offense will rely heavily on a powerful run game. RB Micah Ford has become the nucleus of the Card’s offense- they’ll go as far as he takes them. Ford’s a dynamic North-South back that provides amazing production between the tackles. In a talented ACC with elite tailbacks, Micah Ford can very easily be placed in that next tier behind Mark Fletcher, Isaac Brown and Justice Haynes. Stopping him is priority #1 for Corey Hetherman and Miami’s defense.
As for QB Davis Warren, he did an excellent job managing the win against Hawaii. Stanford was taking plenty of shots down field, while carving underneath when needed. the Cardinal offensive line did a proper job keeping Davis upright and giving him plenty of time in the pocket against an inferior, undersized pass rush. The biggest thing I’m interested to see will be the amount of heavy set (multi TE formations) Stanford rolls out against Miami, in order to give just that lick of extra time against the ‘Canes front 7. They lined up in it a few times against the ‘Bows, followed by a few Ford rushes and a QB Bootleg pass completion.
Miami v Stanford
It’s Canes vs Cardinal on the West Coast under the Friday Night Lights. While Stanford flexed their muscles against a talented G5 Hawaii, there’s a MASSIVE difference between the Rainbow Warriors and the Miami Hurricanes. Miami is clear cut the better program on both sides of the football, and should easily dominate the line of scrimmage. Not much else to needs to be said- go play 60 minutes of Miami Hurricanes football and set the tone for the season to come.
I expect an over 225 yards in the air plus 130 yards on the ground night from Miami’s offense, spearheaded by Darian Mensah, Mark Fletcher and Malachi Toney.
Final Score Prediction: Miami, 42-10
