MIAMI, Fla. – Fresh off a win over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup Final, Inter Miami resumes regular season play on Sunday as they take on a struggling San Diego FC.

The Herons look to get their first win in MLS competition for the month of September, as all of their previous matches this month have all resulted in draws. While the draws still reward one point in the standings, the team has missed out on a crucial six points by missing wins from their last three.

With their recent win over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup, the Herons will be looking to take their momentum from that competition and apply it to their MLS season.

While the Inter offense has been firing on all cylinders, scoring five goals in their last three MLS games, the defense just cannot seem to hold it together as the team has ironically enough, given up five goals in their last three games.

As we enter the final few months of regular season play, Inter Miami currently sits second in the eastern conference, however, the gap between them and third place New England shrink with every tie that Inter produces, making a win on Sunday somewhat of an urgent matter if they want to keep their spot in the playoffs.

The team also currently sits in third place in the Supporters Shield standings, however a win on Sunday and a Vancouver loss could easily swing the pendulum and put Inter up into second.

Coming off his 100th goal in his time at Inter-Miami on Wednesday, Messi looks to bring that high with him into Sunday’s match as he currently sits first in goals scored and assists given in the MLS, currently leading both categories by one in their respective stats.

While this game may not look like much on paper, this game represents a lot for playoff implications for both teams, on one side, it’s a team looking to keep its spot in the race, on the other side, we a have a team looking to propel itself into the playoff picture.
