Princewill Umanmielen’s return to Oxford was already going to be one of the more interesting storylines of Saturday’s LSU-Ole Miss matchup.

Now, it has another layer.

The LSU edge rusher was served court papers Tuesday in the parking lot outside LSU’s football facility in connection with a lawsuit filed by Ole Miss, according to reports from ESPN and multiple Louisiana outlets.

Ole Miss filed the lawsuit in July against Umanmielen and former Rebels offensive lineman Devin Harper, alleging that the players breached revenue-sharing agreements they signed with the school before transferring to LSU. Ole Miss is seeking $550,000 from Umanmielen and $400,000 from Harper, plus attorneys’ fees and court costs.

The dispute centers on agreements the players signed with Ole Miss in January. According to the lawsuit, the agreements included penalties if the players left the program within a specified period. Both ultimately entered the transfer portal and followed former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin to LSU.

Being served does not mean Umanmielen has been found liable. It means he was formally given legal documents notifying him of the case and requiring him to respond through the court process.

The timing, however, is hard to ignore.

Umanmielen was served just days before LSU travels to Oxford for a top-10 matchup against his former team — and Kiffin’s first game back at Ole Miss since leaving the program.

The edge rusher has quickly become one of LSU’s most important defensive players. After spending last season at Ole Miss, where he recorded nine sacks and 13 tackles for loss, Umanmielen transferred to LSU in January.

Through LSU’s first two games this season, he has five sacks, including three against Louisiana Tech, according to LSU and multiple reports.

So when Umanmielen steps onto the field Saturday, he won’t simply be facing his former team.

He’ll be returning to the place where he established himself as an SEC pass rusher — while a legal dispute with that same program continues in the background.

For LSU, the court case remains separate from the game.

But with Kiffin returning to Oxford and Umanmielen facing his former team, the storyline surrounding Saturday’s matchup continues to grow.
