BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – Louisville junior quarterback Lamar Jackson has been invited to New York for the second consecutive year.
A Heisman Trophy win is something a lot of collegiate football players dream of, but to win the Heisman Trophy twice is history made in its own right.
Former Ohio State quarterback Archie Griffin won the Heisman Trophy in 1974-1975, making him the only player to ever win the Heisman Trophy twice. Jackson has a chance to follow in Griffin’s footsteps.
The Boynton Beach High School 2015 alum had a magnificent season last year, throwing for 3,543 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions. This season, Jackson threw for 3,489 yards, 25 touchdowns and five interceptions with the nation’s No. 3 quarterback rating at 85.9, according to ESPN.
Jackson, who led the Cardinals to a 8-4 record this season, will be alongside some eye-popping candidates this Saturday.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was also in the Heisman running last year, has definitely made a rise in votes for this year’s Heisman. Mayfield finished the regular season with a 71 percent completion rate, throwing for 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just five interceptions with the nation’s No. 2 quarterback rating at 93.1, according to ESPN.
After rushing for almost 2,000 yards (1,973 in total), it’s only right that Stanford junior running back Bryce Love gets an invite to New York. Love has averaged 8.3 yards per carry with 17 touchdowns to date.
Whether Jackson takes home the trophy or not, it will definitely be hard to follow in his shadows. Representing for all current and future high school football players in South Florida, Jackson continues to pave the way.
The Heisman Trophy Awards Ceremony will be held tomorrow night (Saturday, Dec. 9; 8 p.m. start; nationally televised on ESPN). The ceremony will once again be given out at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, inside Times Square in New York City.
