DELRAY BEACH – Trey Rainey is just getting started with his high school football journey.
The sophomore running back announced on his Twitter account yesterday (Feb. 6) that he will be transferring from Boca Raton to American Heritage (Delray Beach). He kept it concise with the reason behind his decision.
With that said, we gave former Boca Raton head coach/current athletic director Brandon Walker an opportunity to weigh in on Rainey’s move.
“We were disappointed he’s leaving,” Walker said. “Anytime a kid leaves, it’s disappointing. But we are excited about the future of Boca High football, and we will continue preparing great young men on and off the field.”
Under Walker’s leadership, Rainey produced a breakout sophomore season at Boca Raton. In seven games full games played (plus another half), the 5-foot-11, 170-pound running back had 756 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Rainey’s best play (arguably) came against Dwyer in Week 11 of the regular season, which was a potential playoff clincher for Boca Raton. With his 67-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, he effectively sealed the deal for the Bobcats in what turned out to be a 19-12 win.
Rainey finished that game with 21 carries for 158 yards and the playoff-clinching score. For his efforts, he was voted as our Breakthrough Player of Week 11.
Rainey had five straight games in which he rushed for 100+ yards, including Boca Raton’s Class 8A first-round playoff game against Vero Beach. In the Bobcats 42-7 road loss to the Indians, Rainey had 115 rushing yards and his team’s only score.
“My sophomore season went very well,” Rainey said. “Starting with an early injury in the preseason game against Cardinal Gibbons, I bounced back and set the tone. I took the starting position and led our team, which grew together and made it to the playoffs.”
Moving forward, Rainey will look to elevate his game even more as an upcoming junior at American Heritage (Delray Beach).
“I haven’t had the chance to connect with all of the coaches,” Rainey said. “But personally, I look forward to my aggressive north-to-south running, more catches out of the backfield and a strong chemistry between my teammates.”
NOTE: Rainey will team up again with former Boca Raton sophomore wide receiver Matthew Smiciklas, who made his transfer move to American Heritage last month.
