BOYNTON BEACH – Czar Beneby could be in celebration mode soon.
The former Savannah State wide receiver wants a chance to impress NFL scouts and earn a roster spot.
This would be his most impressive achievement to date, and it can happen sometime today (April 25).
“I’m excited and humbled to reach the next level,” the 6-foot-5, 195-pound wide receiver said. “I’m progressing in school to become the first in my family to graduate. Getting picked would add to that as the greatest moments in my family’s history.”
To be honest, Beneby’s stat sheet at Savannah State won’t jump off the page. His best season came as a junior, when he had 10 catches for 97 yards.
There is a good explanation for that.
“As a run-first offense, I’d say my best individual game was against Morgan State my junior season because of the amount of targets,” Beneby said. “It allowed me to get receiving yards.”
In that Morgan State game, Beneby had four catches for 39 yards.
There was another memorable moment at Savannah State for the Boynton Beach High School alum. It happened in his junior year as well.
“It was me reaching the end zone in front of my mom,” Beneby said. “It was a two-point conversion. It may not have been for six points, but just experiencing the feeling was what I always dreamed of.”
WTOC-TV (Channel 11-Savannah, Ga.) spoke with Beneby about his potential NFL opportunity.
“I feel like as a player and a person, you come with the whole package on and off the field,” Beneby told a WTOC-TV reporter in a video chat interview. “I feel like I portray it to the community a lot. I have great football playing aspects. I’m a 6-foot-5 receiver. I can go up and get it.”
The former Savannah State wideout says he heard from several teams interested in his talent, according to WOTC-TV.
“It’s so exciting,” he told WOTC-TV. “Just being able to grow up playing this sport ad being able to finally do something I really love, it’s just so surreal.”
The trump card for Beneby is that he played high school football as a receiver and caught passes from reigning NFL MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, who set a multitude of league records this past season as a true dual-threat signal caller.
“That’s my boy, my brother,” Beneby said of Jackson in his interview with WOTC-TV.
Beneby knows there’s more than one way to get on an NFL team. Whether he gets drafted or not, the icing on the cake would be the Baltimore Ravens giving him a shot to be reunited with his childhood friend.
“Oh we’d take over together,” Beneby said. “It would be a dream come true to play with my brother. He knows to throw it up, and I’ll come down with it for sure.”
We’ll see what transpires with Beneby over the next several hours.
