In a state full of top-tier talent, Saint Andrew’s Jack Whelchel is starting to make waves as the recruiting cycle heats up.

Things started rolling for Whelchel in his 2025 season; the versatile defensive back/linebacker totaled 59 total tackles, an interception, and three pass breakups. Whelchel also chipped in on offense, recording 15 catches for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Heading into the 7-on-7 circuit, Whelchel has played a big role for an elite RAW Miami squad, notching a game-winning interception against the Wunna Warriors in the semifinals. As a result of his play, the defensive back/linebacker was featured as a “stock up” player for Rivals.

Whelchel, talking to New Era Prep, elaborated on how he can impact the game with his versatility and physical tools.

“Being able to play both safety and receiver lets me affect the game on both sides. I can make plays on offense and then come back and stop plays on defense, so I stay involved the whole game. At 6’4, I can out-reach most players. On offense, I can win jump balls, and on defense, I can cover more ground and break up passes easier.”

Expanding upon this, the versatile standout for Saint Andrews spoke about his biggest strengths.

“I’d say my size, athleticism, and ball skills. I can track the ball really well and make plays in the air, plus I’m physical and can match up with different types of players.”

Finally, Whelchel spoke about his recruiting process up to this point.

“The recruiting process has been a blessing; I have just been building relationships with coaches and staying patient. At the next level, coaches can expect me to come in ready to work, compete early, and keep developing into a playmaker and leader over time.”

Holding offers from eight schools, which include Coastal Carolina, Cornell, Syracuse, and Minnesota, Whelchel already has some very good offers to choose from. But with his skillset on full display at OT7 and a big spring ahead, the recruitment process is likely just getting started for the Saint Andrew’s product.
