Coral Gables, FL. The Tricia Cullop era of Miami Women’s Basketball has officially begun.
This morning (November 4), The Miami Hurricanes hosted the Stetson Hatters for the college basketball regular season opener. That wasn’t the only festivities held at the Watsco Center today, as the ‘Canes invited thousands of elementary school students from across the greater Miami-Dade County area to attend the game. The atmosphere was electric, as the kids were loud and proud in support of Miami WBB.
Surprisingly, Stetson opened the game with a bang. The Hatters struck first, and looked incredible from beyond the arc. Despite the blatantly obvious size advantage, Stetson played scrappy and full of heart, keeping things competitive throughout the first half.
After their brief beginning slump, Miami showed why they were the better basketball team. On all aspects of the game, Miami was stronger. Jasmyne Roberts headlined with 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Cameron Williams recorded a double double in her Hurricane debut with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Another strong performance came from Senior Haley Cavinder, who was on fire today. Cavinder was working her way throughout the paint, knocking down 12 points and secured 8 rebounds.
Early on, Miami struggled with 3 point shooting, falling as low as 7% at one point. Towards the middle of the third quarter, the 3 ball started falling, causing for more shots to rain in. At the end of the game, the ‘Canes finished at 21% from 3, alongside shooting 42% from the field.
With it being so early in the season, theres obviously many things to work on with this predominantly new squad. As the season advances, I project for that shooting percentage to increase.
Miami starts the Tricia Cullop era at 1-0. The Hurricanes will host Jacksonville University next Monday, November 11th. Tip off is slated for 7:00 P.M.
