BOCA RATON – In what has been a shortened five-game season, St. Andrew’s made the most of its final opportunity to shine on the field last night (Nov. 19).
Led by senior quarterback Jeremiah Young, the Scots blew out the North Broward Prep Eagles in running fashion. He and his younger brother, sophomore athlete Bill Young, combined for four rushing touchdowns in the second half of their team’s 43-7 victory at home.
St. Andrew’s (3-2) was briefly in a tight one, as it had a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter. But starting at the 3:22 mark of the game’s pivotal period, Jeremiah Young bursted out of a jam and used his speed to race down the field 60+ yards for a score, putting his team up 24-7.
The next St. Andrew’s offensive drive would be more methodical, as the home team’s 17-point lead held up from the end of the third until 8:58 left in the fourth quarter. This is when Jeremiah Young busted out some moves to break loose for a 26-yard touchdown run to extend his team’s lead to 30-7.
Just when the Eagles (1-3) thought they had a chance to make this game close again, the Scots defense came through with three interceptions on three consecutive Eagles offensive drives to close it out.
Bill Young finalized the game’s 43-7 score with two touchdown runs of 50+ yards, both of which came just one play after his team’s defense caught picks to give them the ball back. The sophomore’s two long touchdown runs came at the 7:22 and 3:25 marks of the fourth quarter, respectively.
The four combined rushing scores in the second half by the Young brothers represented a symbolic shift in a sense.
“I came into this week knowing it would be my last game,” Jeremiah Young said. “I just tried to end it out with a bang and pass the torch to the younger guys.”
Bill Young spoke on his two long touchdown runs to end the game and his team’s 2020 season.
“I just had faith in my line,” Bill Young said. “I knew they would get the right blocks for me, so I just found the hole, broke it out and just ran to make a play.”
Jeremiah Young discussed how his two second half touchdown runs happened.
“I was just put in the right situation by Coach [Jimmy] Robertson with his play calling,” Jeremiah Young said. “I did what I needed to do, which was to make plays.”
Jeremiah Young accounted for another score earlier in the game, which he threw a touchdown pass to junior athlete Matthew James on a go route to put the Scots up 14-0 in the first half.
And the game’s first score came off an early kickoff return to the end zone by junior Sean Jordan. This gave the Scots a 7-0 lead that they would never relinquish from start to finish.
“We wanted to make it special for the seniors because they deserve it,” Robertson said. “And going into this week, I told Jeremiah and Bill it was going to be their show. I told Bill he was going to keep getting the football. He’s a playmaker. It’s great that he’s a sophomore and I have two more years with him. And with Jeremiah, I can’t say enough about him. He trusted me his whole entire high school career, and I’m so proud of him.”
Jeremiah Young recapped his senior season at St. Andrew’s.
“It was a short season,” Jeremiah Young said. “Difficult season, 12 weeks of practice, finished 3-2. We were put in a tough situation and made the best of it.”
Bill Young on how the Scots 2020 season went:
“There’s no other season like it,” Bill Young said. “It’s going to be one that everyone remembers…You never know when an opportunity will come, so you just come out here and play.”
Robertson summed up the 2020 experience at St. Andrew’s.
“We didn’t know if we were going to play any games,” Robertson said. “We went 12 weeks, five games strong with zero problems. That’s just a lot from the top down. Our administration did a great job of leading and trusting us. Our coaches did a great job of following protocols, giving the kids an opportunity to practice and play games every single day through this pandemic. I’m just so blessed that we had the opportunity to play five games and got some film for those guys.”
