BOCA RATON – Very little action took place in the first quarter for both St. Andrews and Boca Raton Christian.
But it was an entirely different story to start the second quarter.
The Scots broke a scoreless tie with a 5-yard touchdown run from junior running back Jovan Joseph, who put his team on the board for a 6-0 lead.
At the 10:48 mark, the Blazers special teams came through by blocking a Scots extra point attempt to keep the road down by just six.
Just a few plays later, Blazers quarterback Miller Waid connected with Zach Norris for a touchdown pass. The road team took a 7-6 lead at the 9:42 mark after a successful extra point attempt by kicker Zach Salisbury.
But Boca Raton Christian’s lead would last just a little over three minutes long.
St. Andrews junior quarterback Jeremiah Young marched his team down the field and used his legs to squeak past Boca Christian’s defense for a 6-yard touchdown run.
A two-point conversion pass from Young to his younger (no pun intended) brother and freshman wife receiver Bill Young was good, putting the Scots ahead 14-7 at the 6:22 mark.
It was all St. Andrews from that point on – mostly.
At the 6:11 mark in the second frame, Young found wideout Aaron Osonua for a long touchdown pass to extend the Scots lead to 20-7. The two-point conversion attempt was no good.
Less than three minutes later, Young handed the ball off to senior Daniel Brinzan for a 1-yard touchdown run. With the extra point, St. Andrews extended its lead to 27-7.
The first half reached its conclusion with a Boca Raton Christian score, courtesy of a quarterback sneak to the end zone by Waid. The extra point attempt was no good.
The Matthew James Show took over in the third quarter, as the sophomore athlete caught one of his two interceptions (8:05 mark) and scored a touchdown on a 15-yard run (6:09 mark).
The Scots lead was extended even further from 27-13 at halftime to 33-13 midway through the third frame.
And at the 2:38 mark, James caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jeremiah Young for his second score of the game. With an extra point, St. Andrews raced its way to a 40-13 lead over Boca Raton Christian.
After the Blazers cut the Scots lead to 40-20 early in the fourth, it was James who caught yet another touchdown pass from Young. An extra point extended the lead for St. Andrews to 47-20 with 8:33 left.
The final score would come on yet another touchdown pass at the buzzer, as St. Andrews improved its record to 2-1 and Boca Raton Christian dropped to 1-2 after three games play.
“I have been saying this since the summer. We’re explosive, and we just have to get the ball to our playmakers,” Jeremiah Young said after the game. “Let them do what they do best, and that’s to make plays.”
St. Andrew’s head coach Jimmy Robertson couldn’t agree more.
“Our team goal this week was to pass the ball,” Robertson said. “We have guys that can stretch the field and make plays. I put a lot of pressure on Jeremiah, and he stepped up to the challenge. He put the ball in our playmakers’ hands, and as you can see, they did their job.”
Jeremiah Young (six touchdowns accounted for tonight) spoke glowingly of James, who had three touchdowns on offense and two interceptions on defense tonight.
“That kid has got a lot of potential,” Jeremiah Young said. “We just gotta get him turned up. You see what happens when he has the ball in his hands.”
Robertson’s face beamed up when asked about how James performed tonight.
“He can do it all,” Robertson said of James. “He has great vision and he can make people miss. He’s a really special player.”
Boca Raton Christian head coach Clay Shiver spoke on how his team battled tonight against St. Andrews.
“It’s tough to prepare for an offense like theirs in a couple of days,” Shiver said. “The storm (Hurricane Dorian) threw everything off, but that’s no excuse. They have got a well-coached team and some good athletes. Their quarterback (Jeremiah Young) can put it on people.”
