Surprise: Coconut Creek slips by Western, 20-15

DAVIE – It was a close game here in Western Broward County on Friday night (Sept. 8).

Coconut Creek came into the Western Wildcats territory and took away their undefeated record. 

To start the game off, the game was scoreless until 4:43 left in the first quarter, when Coconut Creek quarterback James Hayes took it up the middle for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good, putting Coconut Creek up 7-0 over Western.

The Wildcats got the ball from there. And on the second play, quarterback Davi Belfort threw the ball down the field to wide receiver Koby Howard for the touchdown pass. The extra point was good, and this made the game tied at 7-7. 

Coconut Creek got the ball back and ran the clock down, ending the first quarter all tied up 7-7. 

Coconut Creek came out with the ball to start the second quarter. On this drive, the Cougars could not score, but instead got their punt blocked in the end zone that turned into two points for the Wildcats. 

This punt block for a score put the Wildcats up 9-7. 

A non-scoring second quarter besides the two points led to halftime, with Western holding on at 9-7 over Coconut Creek.

Coming out of halftime, Coconut Creek received the ball. On this drive, they scored with 8:26 left in the third quarter, putting them up 13-9 with a missed field goal attempt. 

The Wildcats received the ball – and wait, what is this? 

What happened?

Coconut Creek senior cornerback Elijah Cannon intercepted the ball from Western senior quarterback and Virginia Tech verbal commit Davi Belfort. But Coconut Creek could not score on this interception drive, as the score remained at 13-9.

The Wildcats received the ball, and out of nowhere with 4:03 left in the third quarter, they were intercepted by the Cougars for a pick-six.

With an extra point, this put Coconut Creek up 20-9.

With time running out, Belfort kept the ball for quarterback sneak up the middle to help the Wildcats cut the Cougars lead to 20-15. They attempted the two-point conversion, but did not succeed. 

Coconut Creek received the ball back and decided to run out the clock. With 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Coconut Creek decided to get into victory formation and end this one.

The final score was:

Coconut Creek Cougars – 20 

Western Wildcats – 15

Coconut Creek (2-1) came in and took away the undefeated title from Western (1-1) for an amazing victory on the road.
