BOCA RATON – Before we officially move on to Week 3, let us take a final look back at what happened with our Team of Week 2.
In St. John Paul II’s season opener against Berean Christian, it was a 45-point explosion that featured 3 touchdown catches from wide receiver Jamal Crawford and more.
The scoring barrage did not happen until the midpoint of the second quarter, when quarterback A.J. Sheridan connected with Crawford for a touchdown at the 5:25 mark.
The Eagles (1-0) went up 13-0 at halftime over the Bulldogs (0-2), thanks to a blocked punt by Roderick Parker, which was recovered by Crawford, who took it to the end zone with 2:18 left.
In the third quarter, St. John Paul II was on go mode, as quarterback Antonio Scionti rushed for a 15-yard score (9:00 mark; 20-0 lead for SJP) and connected with Crawford for yet another score (8:39 mark; 27-0 lead for SJP).
The final three scores came from underclassmen Matthew Wilson (3:42 mark of the third quarter; 33-0 lead for SJP), Clayton Thevenin (40 seconds left in the third quarter; 39-0 lead for SJP), and Curtis Douglas (5:51 mark of the fourth quarter; 45-0 lead for SJP).
Trevor Dick was one of our Breakthrough Player of Week 2 nominees, as he tallied 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery.
Benjamin Laurore, who was our MVP of Week 2, had 4 tackles, 2 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 interception against Berean Christian.
Eagles head coach Kelcey Brooks said his team should have played better in their 45-0 win over the Bulldogs.
“We’re undisciplined right now,” Brooks said. “We left a lot of plays out there. We have to humble ourselves.”
Senior defensive end/linebacker Baakari Flowers loves the way Brooks is pushing him and his teammates both on and off the field.
“He works us hard,” the 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior said. “He is all about winning.”
The next game for St. John Paul II will be tomorrow (Sept. 25) on the road against Westminster Academy (1-1). The Eagles-Lions kickoff time is set for 7 p.m. in Fort Lauderdale.
