BOCA RATON – Only two Palm Beach County private school teams came out on top last week: St. John Paul II and Boca Raton Christian.
Of the two winning teams, it was determined that the Eagles (No. 4-ranked private school in Palm Beach County; 3-2 record) was the more impressive one with its 58-14 triumph last Thursday (Oct. 15) over the Jupiter Christian Eagles (3-2).
For that, St. John Paul II was crowned our Team of Week 6.
The two-time team winner also claimed the honor in Week 2 of the regular season.
Sophomore athlete Benjamin Laurore, who had a great game with three catches for 100+ yards and one touchdown, spoke on the team recognition.
“It’s really an honor,” Laurore said. We went through our ups and downs. We had to come out focused and mentally prepared to win that game. And most of all, we had to play like a team.”
St. John Paul II sophomore athlete Matthew Wilson chimed in.
“We just got to keep working hard,” said Wilson, who had nine carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns, plus one catch for 13 yards, in his team’s 44-point win. “We got to keep playing as a team and don’t be selfish.”
St. John Paul II (3-2) took a 28-0 lead over Jupiter Christian (3-2) into the second quarter. In what was a battle of Eagles vs. Eagles, the home team then went on to tack on 14 more points for a 42-14 halftime lead.
St. John Paul II, which is currently our No. 4-ranked private school team in Palm Beach County, had a 16-0 scoring run in the second half.
Junior wide receiver Jaylen Leggett, who was our Breakthrough Player of Week 6, had some brief words on what his team has accomplished.
“It feels great,” said Leggett, who had three catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns. “It’s a blessing to earn that.”
