This one means a little bit more: This week’s matchup Between Cardinal Newman and Carrollwood Day is as good as it gets. #2 Newman sits at #8 in the Open Division rankings taking up the final spot, Carrollwood Day sits around 15. This win would all but solidify the Crusaders’ case to be in the top eight, and give Carrollwood Day a very compelling argument.

In addition to the open division battle, Undefeated Carrollwood Day is seeking revenge from last year. Cardinal Newman handed the Patriots their only loss in the state semifinals, en route to winning it all. That game, in which Newman led 41-13, ended up being a classic with now West Virginia QB Jyron Hughley, and Auburn Adam Balogoun-Ali sealing the deal.

This year is shaping up to be different. A new look Cardinal Newman team led by Pedro Martinez, Justin Barerra, and Janarro Sumpter have played one of the toughest schedules in the state and have managed to come out to a 6-2 start, with losses over top ranked West Boca Raton and Chaminade-Madonna.

The Newman defense has also been stout throughout the season, however the Patriots of CDS have allowed more than 7 points only twice this season, meaning the Newman offense will have to once again show up big. Something that they weren’t able to do against West Boca and Chaminade.

Open division stakes. Revenge on the Patriots’ mind. What else can you ask for?

New Era Prep will be LIVE from this state semifinal rematch between powerhouse programs from the East and West Coasts of the state.

Is the biggest game of the season for the 561 so far?
