Two programs separated by a shared space obsession meet Saturday with Big 12 positioning on the line. No. 20 Houston (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) hosts UCF (3-1, 1-0) in a game that doubles as a grudge match — the Knights still haven’t forgotten last November’s 30-27 loss in Orlando that denied them bowl eligibility.

Houston’s offense is humming. The Cougars lead the Big 12 in scoring at 44.5 points per game, powered by quarterback Conner Weigman, who has thrown for 947 yards and 11 touchdowns with just one interception. Running back Re’Shaun Sanford is coming off a 120-yard breakout, and Amare Thomas has caught a touchdown in nine straight games — the longest active streak in the nation. Houston also boasts the nation’s sixth-best rushing defense, allowing just 63.5 yards per game.

UCF is surviving on defense and discipline. The Knights forced four turnovers in a 21-13 win over TCU, with edge rushers Isaiah Nixon and Jeffson Lafontant wreaking havoc up front. Backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins set a program record by completing 19 of 20 passes (95%) against the Horned Frogs, though he’ll face a Houston defense that allows just 2.4 yards per carry.

The uniforms add a layer of intrigue.Houston will wear its alternate “Houston Blue” jerseys for this game, a special uniform honoring the city. The Cougars have lost each of the last two times they’ve broken out the blue — to Baylor in 2024 and Texas Tech last October. UCF coach Scott Frost noted this week that Houston originally wanted a whiteout theme, but the Knights declined to wear their black home jerseys for an 11 a.m. road game in Texas.

The stakes are simple. Houston wants to avoid an 0-2 Big 12 start. UCF wants a signature road win and its first 2-0 conference opening since joining the league. The Cougars are 12-point favorites, but Scott Frost’s team has made a habit of ugly wins.
