An inter-state battle between Florida Atlantic and the University of Florida is on tap to kick off the 2026 campaign for both squads from Gainesville at 7:30PM EST on Saturday.
The Gators come into this matchup between 26-28 point favorites depending on the source, and although a heavy Florida victory is expected, the Owls head into this matchup looking to surprise some people.
Florida Atlantic begins year two of the Zach Kittley era with high hopes, as the Owls retained key contributors on both sides of the ball including QB Caden Veltkamp, WR Easton Messer, C/G Vinny Fiacable, DL CJ Doggette, LB Leon Hart JR and CB Damarius McGhee. Despite the 4-8 record from a year ago, Florida Atlantic bucked the trend of G5 portal chaos and head into this season with a nucleus that knows what needs to be addressed to fix that record.
While retention was key, the Owls also made additions in the transfer portal that they hope will address some of the issues from a year ago. On the offensive side of the ball, Leonard Farrow joins the running back room after a gaudy career at Fairmont State, providing the Owls with an athletic running back that can be a contributor in both the run and pass game.
A lot of the issues for Florida Atlantic in 2025 were found on the defensive side of the ball and while they were able to retain a lot of the positive production, the Owls will also lean on multiple newcomers on defense. In the front 7, DL Blake Burris, EDGE rushers Jonathan Bax, Jay Crable, and LB Joe Sipp are all expected to take on heavy roles, while in the secondary JK Johnson and Tyson Rooks will contribute at corner and safety respectively.
As for UF, this marks game 1 of the Jon Sumrall era and they will be looking to make a positive impression on a fanbase that is looking to get back to success following multiple dismal years under Billy Napier.
On the offensive side of the ball, Junior Quarterback Aaron Philo is set to take the reins at QB, winning the starting job over sophomore Tramell Jones. Philo transferred to UF this offseason from Georgia Tech alongside OC Buster Faulkner and in two seasons he has completed 59/102 attempts for 938 yards, 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Inexperience is certainly a factor for Philo, however UF has surrounded him with veteran talent that should allow him to find his groove early on. That starts with Jadan Baugh, as the offense will run through third year Gator back who has a chance to be the first overall selected running back in the upcoming NFL draft. Outside of Baugh, the Owls retain a pair of talented sophomore wide receivers in Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III, while Eric Singleton Jr. joins the WR corps after two years at Georgia Tech and last year at Auburn.
Defensively, Jon Sumrall called on former Kentucky DC Brad White to take over at DC and he looks to rebuild a UF Unit that left a lot to be desired at times under the previous regime.
The Gators biggest strength will be a versatile linebacker group led by Jayden Woods, Miles Graham and Aaron Chiles, as all three have been described as leaders throughout the offseason.
UF certainly will have the overall talent advantage in this matchup, however in game one of a new regime there is always a chance things could go awry. That is what Florida Atlantic will be looking to capitalize on, as if the Gators make mistakes, that opens the door for a veteran led Owls squad to make this one interesting.
Below are three storylines to watch from The Swamp:
New UF offense vs an FAU defense which believes it has improved. Which shines?
Game 1 of the season under a new regime can oftentimes be a learn on the fly situation and for UF, they head into this matchup against FAU looking to learn exactly what a Philo led offense can do on Saturdays.
On the other side of the line of scrimmage they will be facing an FAU defense which will be looking to prove that they have fixed their struggles from a year ago. That improvement starts with a defensive line that will employ more depth than we saw a season ago, which could prove to be important as they look to avoid attrition against a staunch UF offensive line.
Philo will need to shake off some rust in this matchup, however luckily for the Gators, Baugh will be ready to carry a significant portion of the load offensively. That is ultimately what could be the difference maker in this game, as Florida Atlantic will have to pay a significant amount of attention to Baugh which will limit their ability to force Philo to make mistakes.
It will be a tall task, but if the Owls want to attack Philo and ultimately make this game closer than what is expected to be, they will have to find a way to slow Baugh down at times. If they are able to do that, the next step will be finding ways to generate pressure in the backfield and force Philo to make mistakes.
While Florida Atlantic finding a way to consistently stop the run and generate pressure on Philo is improbable, doing it on a small scale is certainly in reach and will be their best path to defensive success.
As for UF, if they are able to get Philo into a rhythm early and Florida Atlantic isn’t able to provide resistance, that is how this one becomes a blowout, even with the Owls high octane offense.
Can Florida Atlantic’s offense steal the show in the Swamp?
There is no question Florida has the deeper roster and should be favored to win, however Florida Atlantic brings an offense to the table that presents a different challenge than your typical G5.
The Owls will roll out Zach Kittley’s air-raid attack on Saturday and in year two of the regime, he will be looking for a cleaner operation than what the Owls displayed in 2025. The proof of concept was there, as Caden Veltkamp threw for 3,641 yards and 24 touchdowns, however he also threw 17 interceptions. Veltkamp underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason and the hope is that some of the turnovers will be erased with a fully healthy arm.
Outside of limiting turnovers, the Owls will also be looking to display an improved run game, as Kaden Shields-Dutton and Leonard Farrow will combine to give the owls a diverse duo on the backfield.
Florida Atlantic’s air raid offense combined with their fast tempo presents an interesting challenge to a UF defense which will be looking to establish its identity under first year defensive coordinator Brad White. If the unit makes mistakes early on, Veltkamp has the knowledge to make them pay for it, but he will need a perfect performance if the Owls truly want to put the gators on upset watch.
It won’t be entirely up to Veltkamp, as he will need proper protection from a re-tooled offensive line and contributions from his running backs. If he gets those two things, combined with mistakes from a new UF defense, that will open the door for the Owls to steal the show.
Can UF play sound football
The Billy Napier era at UF was littered with mistakes in all areas and what many will be looking for in game 1 of the new era is simply sound football.
While the penalties weren’t necessarily common, they were costly for last year’s Gators, especially when you look at some of their close losses. Sumrall referenced this in his opening week press conference, noting that specifically on special teams, he will be making sure his squad does the little things right.
Mistakes and penalties are what could allow Florida Atlantic to creep into the game, as they have the explosive offense and enough pieces on defense to make this one interesting if the Gators give them something to work with.
Sumrall’s Tulane squad from a year ago finished 5th in the American Conference overall in total penalty yardage, but the general consensus was that his team was fundamentally sound each Saturday. That is what Gators fans will be looking for this Saturday, as although mistakes may happen in game one of a new regime, it’s not letting them snowball which is what will prevent them from becoming an issue.
