INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Tennessee is heading back to the Elite Eight after 78-65 win over Kentucky.
After losing both of the regular-season matchups, Tennessee avenged Kentucky and will head to the Elite Eight. This game was one-sided as Tennessee came out with something to prove.
The tone was set early in the first half, A Jahmai Mashack shot gave Tennessee a 39-20 lead late in the first half, something that would be tough to overcome for Tennessee.
The Wildcats were able to go on a decent 8-4 run to close the half down 15, but big shots for the Vols propelled them in the second.
In the second half, there were many occasions where Kentucky was able to trim the lead to 12 or 13, but Tennessee’s veteran leadership was able to respond every time.
Most of these big plays came in part from Zakai Zeigler, who led all players in points with 18 and also had 10 assists. Jordan Gaines also contributed 16 off the bench.
Both teams shot around the same, but the factor in this game was Tennessee’s poise. To be able to go up by 19 and keep the lead throughout the game, limiting Kentucky from making runs is what won them this game. They’ll have to repeat this in their next one so have a chance at playing in San Antonio.
The Volunteers will run it back at Lucas Oil Stadium Sunday at 2:20 for an Elite Eight matchup vs #1 Houston with a trip to San Antonio on the line.
