MIAMI – In what has been a season of transition for Benjamin, there exists a youth movement that will serve the program well for the next several years.
A core member of the Buccaneers present and future is Darrell Sweeting, who had a breakout game yesterday (Oct. 17) against Gulliver Prep (Miami). The defensive back/wide receiver made his mark mainly on offense in this one, as the 6-foot, 165-pound sophomore had four catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
For Sweeting, the two scores were relatively easy as he got open for the long passes thrown by freshman quarterback Tyler Aronson, who received his first offer today from FAU. His touchdown catches of 50 and 76 yards happened during the second half of Benjamin’s 40-28 road loss to Gulliver Prep.
Sweeting also recorded two tackles and two pass breakups at defensive back in yesterday’s game.
“Honestly Gulliver Prep is team that we definitely wanted to come down and beat, especially because they beat us really bad last year,” Sweeting said. “But during halftime, I talked to my head coach (Eric Kresser) and he told me what I could do to score. I listened to him…I told Tyler to trust me and he gave me a head nod. From there, it was really me against my opponent.”
Sweeting has scored on three touchdown passes from Aronson, who is quickly proving to be a valuable leader for Benjamin (1-2).
“Tyler came in and took a big step,” Sweeting said. “He came in starting as our quarterback from game to game. He is just learning and elevating. He’s gonna be great.”
Benjamin senior lineman Joey Schmidt is proud of Sweeting’s growth process on the field in three games played this season, particularly in the Gulliver Prep game.
“Darrell played fast and made some great plays,” Schmidt said. “He’s becoming a great player on both sides of the ball.”
PLEASE NOTE: The next game for Sweeting and the Benjamin Buccaneers is Friday, Oct. 23 at home (7 p.m. kickoff) against defending 3A state champion Chaminade-Madonna (3-1).
