BOCA RATON – Jeremiah Young knows how to bounce back.
In last week’s 34-25 road win (Oct. 30) for St. Andrew’s over Westminster Academy, the senior quarterback was in command of his team, as he accounted for four total scores in the game. He passed for 292 yards and three touchdowns, while adding another one on the ground.
This was a different outcome from St. Andrew’s season opener, when it dropped a 28-20 decision at home to St. John Paul II on Oct. 23.
“Jeremiah had a great game,” Scots head coach Jimmy Robertson said. “He put the ball only where his wide receivers could catch it. His accuracy was on point. More impressive was his leadership during the game. He demands perfection from his teammates.”
In large part because of Young’s level of control throughout last week’s high-scoring game, St. Andrew’s junior athlete Matthew James caught five passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Also, Jack Didonna had six catches for 86 yards and one touchdown.
“The entire game plan was to air it out and chuck the ball around,” Young said. “I was under pressure to play lights out and the best I could do. I felt like I played good.”
Robertson had more to say about Young’s performance.
“Jeremiah is a competitor,” Robertson said. “He understands the game. He stressed to the team all week about paying attention to detail, staying focused, and having fun.”
Robertson on Young being an effective dual-threat quarterback:
“Any time Jeremiah is on the move, it seems like a great play,” Robertson said. “It’s a weapon he has to be able to move in the pocket and throw the ball with such strength and accuracy.”
St. Andrew’s (1-1) is now getting into a groove, particularly with its offense. The Boca Raton-based team has a chance to start a winning streak, with a home game tomorrow night (Nov. 5, 7 p.m. kickoff) against Somerset Academy Canyons (0-0).
We will see what happens for the Scots in the next 36 hours against the Cougars, who will be playing their first game of the season behind junior starting quarterback Benson Barnes.
