The Wellington Wolverines continued their winning ways on Thursday night!

In what was an early defensive struggle, Wellington pulled away late against the Dr. Joaquin Garcia Bulldogs and won by a score of 27-0. The Wolverines forced six turnovers in the game, including four interceptions. Rhys Lewis had a pick-six and a rushing touchdown, while running back Jay’Lan Tyler added the team’s two other rushing touchdowns.

Wellington moves to 5-2 on the season, while Dr. Garcia falls to 2-5 on the season.

The Wellington Defense Shows Out

In a game where offense was at a premium, Wellington’s defense ensured that the Wolverines would have the absolute best chance to win the game.

The defense, as a unit, forced six turnovers against Garcia, flipping the momentum of the game on a consistent basis. Rhys Lewis kicked things off with a pick-six; after reading the throw, Lewis broke on the football and raced his way to the end zone for the score. Defensive backs Deandre King and linebacker Dylan Miller notched interceptions of their own, and in the 4th quarter, Tarren Catul made a leaping interception to seal the game. Outside of the interceptions, Wellington forced a key fumble on a run in the 2nd quarter, while Geo Quintas forced a key fumble for the Wolverines in the second half.

The overall unit played fast and physical all night, no matter where they were on the field. Wellington was stout against the run, provided lockdown coverage, and took advantage of the mistakes that Dr. Garcia made. Over the rest of 2026, the Wolverines defense will be a very fun unit to watch, especially with key matchups on the docket over the next few weeks.

Jay’Lan Tyler Balls Out

Regardless of team, Jay’Lan Tyler was the most explosive offensive player on the field on Thursday night.

Whether he was operating as a kick returner or a running back, Tyler was ripping off yardage consistently for Wellington. He displayed impressive burst and speed once in the open field, allowing him to set up key scoring drives for the Wolverines. Near the goal line, Tyler showed strength and vision, finding the right lanes and powering through defenders for touchdowns.

Ahead of Thursday night’s game, Tyler was credited with 275 yards and four touchdowns as a runner, along with 104 receiving yards. Over the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, the standout Wellington running back is a player who is worth keeping an eye on.

Sherwins Raymond Leads the Dr. Garcia Defense

Despite the offensive struggles, Dr. Garcia’s defense was impressive for large stretches of Thursday night’s game. On that unit, Sherwins Raymond was arguably the best overall player.

Against the Wolverines, the defensive back had a forced fumble, a sack, two tackles for loss, a pass breakup, and four total tackles. Raymond played physically all game long, displayed great instincts, and made big plays that gave the Bulldogs a chance to get back into the game. The defensive back’s best play in the game came on a pass deep down the field; on a vertical route, Raymond ran stride-for-stride with the wideout and forced an incompletion.

No matter what he is asked to do, Raymond has shown the ability to produce at a high level. His defensive skill set and overall athleticism stand out in a major way on the Dr. Garcia defense. Like Jay’lan Tyler for Wellington, Raymond is a player to keep an eye on over the rest of the 2026 season.
