Winston Watkins Jr. entered LSU’s season opener with plenty of expectations surrounding him, and he wasted little time showing what he can bring to the Tigers’ offense.

In LSU’s 51-10 demolition of Clemson, Watkins finished with seven receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown, giving new quarterback Sam Leavitt another explosive weapon in the passing game.

Watkins’ biggest moment came in the third quarter when he hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Leavitt. The score extended LSU’s lead to 38-3 and further emphasized how difficult the Tigers were becoming to defend.

But the touchdown was only part of Watkins’ impact.

His seven receptions accounted for more than 100 yards, providing Leavitt with a consistent target as LSU moved the ball against a Clemson defense that struggled to contain the Tigers’ offense. LSU ultimately finished with 335 passing yards and 644 total yards.

Watkins also made his presence felt earlier in the game. During LSU’s second-quarter scoring drive, Leavitt connected with him for a 20-yard gain, helping keep the offense moving as the Tigers continued to build their lead.

For an LSU offense entering a new era, developing chemistry between Leavitt and his receivers will be critical. The Clemson game offered an early glimpse of what that connection could become.

The Tigers did not need to rely exclusively on Watkins, with multiple players contributing offensively, but his 110-yard performance demonstrated the kind of explosive ability LSU can utilize downfield.

If Watkins can continue producing at that level, he could become one of the central pieces of Kiffin’s offense as LSU moves deeper into the 2026 season.
