CORAL GABLES – The honors continue to flow in for Ahmmon Richards.
Just one day after representing himself well at the ACC Media Kickoff in Charlotte, the Miami junior wide receiver was named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.
This major preseason honor is the second one for Richards, who was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award (nation’s top player) earlier in the week. He joins fellow junior standout and running back Travis Homer (Doak Walker Award Watch List; top running back) as the Miami players from Palm Beach County with multiple award watch list honors.
The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the outstanding FBS receiver in college football. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes college football’s outstanding receiver, not merely college football’s outstanding wide receiver.
“To be mentioned in that category, it’s huge for him,” said Wellington 2019 athlete Mark Antony Richards, the younger brother of Ahmmon. “He’s not done yet. He wants to achieve that goal. He’s going to continue working hard.”
Wellington head coach Tom Abel added to what Mark Antony had to say about Ahmmon.
“His work ethic is impeccable,” Abel
said of Ahmmon. “He deserves to be recognized as one of the best receivers in the nation. Like Mark said, he has some unfinished business. I talk to him all the time, and he said he wants to dominate this year. We know him very well, and we know he’ll do that. We’re very proud of him.”
A consensus Freshman All-American and an All-ACC selection two seasons ago, Ahmmon was a dominant force to be reckoned with in 2016. He set the Miami freshman record for receiving yards, as he bested the mark set by Hurricanes legend Michael Irvin at 934 receiving yards.
Ahmmon was on the field for only eight games in an injury-riddled 2017, but still managed 439 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
In 21 career games, Richards has racked up 73 receptions, 1,373 receiving yards and six touchdown catches.
The 2018 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on the night of December 6 on The Home Depot College Football Awards presented by Gildan.
