In recent memory, the University of Miami has produced numerous elite guards that have shined under the brightest lights. Over the last few years, we’ve seen stars like Isaiah Wong, Matthew Cleavland and Nijel Pack take over as some of the best to run the floor of the Watsco Center.

With that being said, a new court general has made his way to the 305, and his debut has certainly been special. During the opening week of the 2025-26 college basketball season, Miami’s senior G Tre Donaldson has been one of the hottest hoopers in the country.

Donaldson, a 6 foot 3 transfer from the University of Michigan has stood out for his selfless style of play. In the Hurricanes’ first three performances, Tre Donaldson has recorded the following stat-lines:

11/3 v Jacksonville- 21 Mins, 11 Points, 5 Rebounds, 4 Assists, +20 +/-

11/6 v Bethune Cookman- 27 Mins, 23 Points*, 4 Assists, 1 Rebound, 81% FG**, +23 +/-

11.10 v Stetson- 25 Mins, 15 Points, 10 Assists*, 5 Rebounds, 55% FG, +44 +/-

*Denotes Career High

**Career High (Minimum 5 attempts)

What’s stood out to me the most about Tre Donaldson is his selfless style of play. Donaldson may serve as the dictionary definition of a combo-guard, primarily due to his efficiency while driving and dishing. As the primary bring up man, Donaldson’s done an excellent job of facilitating the hardwood and finding an open teammate. If he’s got a solid look, you best believe Tre Donaldson’s driving to the rim.

“I like to play aggressive and be who I am and do what the team needs from me….” Donaldson shared following the ‘Canes 101-61 victory over Bethune Cookman. “I’m a pass first point guard, so me being aggressive helps our team…I take good looks, try not to force nothing and get my other teammates involved. The biggest thing for me is getting aggressive in the right way.”

Defensively, Tre Donaldson thrives on being a pest. In the infantile stage of the season, Miami’s lined up in a full court press man numerous times, especially during their win over Bethune. When asked about the emphasis he’s placed on being an elite on-ball-defender, Tre had this to say:

“It’s really important to me. As a leader, I feel that me doing it gives my guys the confidence to try to do the same.” Donaldson stated. “When we can be pesky and deflect passes and push offenses out away from the three-point line, that makes our defense work very well.”

Miami’s first year Head Coach Jai Lucas has been singing the praises of his 6 foot 3 leader throughout the inaugural week of the season.

“You know, part of when you transfer and go to different places, different things are asked of you.” Coach Lucas said. “For me, his leadership is more of a “I set the example, watch me”, so getting him out of his shell a little bit and use his voice is something he’s started to do. I’ve began seeing that impact on everyone else.”

Tre Donaldson’s elite opening week has been a huge reason of why the University of Miami stands at a perfect 3-0. The ‘Canes’ next test is certainly none to underestimate, as they prepare to travel to Jacksonville, FL. to face off against the defending National Champions- #10 University of Florida Gators, this Sunday night at 8:30 PM.
