Columbus made a statement in the Broward County National High School Football Showcase!
Facing an elite Bishop Gorman team, Columbus secured a major upset victory on Saturday by a score of 33-28. The Explorers were powered by the elite Amir Sears and a great performance from quarterback Kai Moore. Bishop Gorman, thanks to their offense, clawed back late in the game, but could not overcome their mistakes from early in this contest.
The Explorers, thanks to this win, cemented themselves as a major force in Florida’s high school football scene. There is plenty to dive into from this game, so without further ado, it is time for another postgame recap!

Amir Sears, in arguably the biggest test of his high school career, showed that he is one of the best players in the country, regardless of recruiting class. Against Bishop Gorman’s offense, Sears recorded three interceptions, including one late in the game that all but sealed the win for Columbus. The Miami commit was instinctive as the deep safety; he read the quarterback’s eyes and made plays on the ball consistently.
On offense, Sears was simply phenomenal. He had short receptions in space, showing off his speed and overall athleticism. And on deep passes, A1 truly got to shine. Sears burned an elite cornerback in Hayden Stepp for his first touchdown, finishing the play with a diving grab in the end zone. On his second touchdown, the Miami commit mossed his defender, skying high in the air to secure the touchdown.
Sears was already a highly regarded player in the 2027 class, but after the game he had against Bishop Gorman, the conversation needs to move to the next level. The elite Miami commit is one of the best players in the country, and when he arrives on campus for the Hurricanes, he has the ability to be a complete game changer.
Kai Moore Impresses
Even with Amir Sears going nuclear, Columbus needed their quarterback to step up in a major way on Saturday. Kai Moore not only did just that, but excelled in the process.
Against a stout Bishop Gorman defense, Moore was 18-28 for 246 yards and four touchdowns. The Northern Illinois commit was smooth in the pocket, navigating around pressure and delivering the ball on time consistently. He was very effective over the middle of the field and got the ball in the hands of his playmakers consistently. Moore was very effective as a runner, churning out yardage and making players miss in space consistently. And when he needed to make a big throw, Moore came through. His best throw of the day came in the red zone, dropping a perfect throw in the bucket to Tony Brown III for a vital late-game TD.
Moore caught my eye as a player when he was at Miami Norland last season, and he has seemingly taken his game up a notch in 2026. The attention and spotlight will firmly be on Columbus now, and the pressure will be on Moore to continue his high level of play. If he keeps it up, Moore could be a massive riser at his position in Florida and across the country.
Ace Amina and the Bishop Gorman Offense Fight Back
Was it a great overall day for Bishop Gorman on offense? Definitely not. However, the Gaels’ offense showed some impressive fight over the course of their matchup against Columbus.
Quarterback Ace Amina did have three interceptions, but he also threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns. On his best throws, Amina showed off some impressive arm strength and accuracy to all levels of the field. He hit strikes up the seam, hit deep throws with ease, and fired accurate passes outside the numbers. Amina’s biggest throw of the day was right before halftime, as he hit a deep pass to Michael Blackmond for a long TD to cut the lead to a one-score game.
Speaking of Blackmond, he was very impressive for the Gaels. He showed quickness, contested catch ability, and great route running. Only a freshman, he is a major name to watch on the West Coast at wideout.
The most consistent wideout for Bishop Gorman, though, was Aizen Costales-Torres. A 2027 prospect, Costales-Torres was Ace Amina’s favorite target at all levels of the field. He showed off great route-running, hands, and toughness throughout the game. The wideout also showed nice quickness in space, using it to keep the sticks moving on a consistent basis. Costales-Torres is a great player, and in a very talented Bishop Gorman offense, he looks to be a key cog.
Additionally, Trent Walker impressed at tight end. He not only made an impressive contested catch touchdown, but was a reliable target over the middle of the field. Corey Hinton and Noah Cole had some impressive plays throughout the game, whether as runners or pass catchers. Gabe Jaime, on a play that got called back, hit an amazing hurdle and ripped off a big run after the catch. Azavier McDaniel had a great leaping touchdown grab late in the 4th quarter.
One loss does not define a season, and that is especially the case for Bishop Gorman. This team, and especially the offense, has an immense level of talent and skill. Expect them to bounce back in a big way over the rest of the 2026 season.
Other Notes
- Sekou Torre was all over the field for Columbus against Bishop Gorman. His speed was on full display, ranging from sideline to sideline. Torre had multiple tackles, including a TFL, and generated some impressive pressure as a pass rusher. I cannot wait to see how the 2029 prospect continues to develop.
- Phillip Jones Jr., a 2027 prospect, was a force for the Explorers. He had a sack, a TFL, and was causing havoc all day long against Bishop Gorman. Keep an eye on him as an underrated player in the 2027 class.
- At running back for Columbus, Cecil Smith and BJ Wilson Jr. were both impressive. Smith opened the scoring with blazing speed on a screen pass, while Wilson Jr. was a force for the Explorers down the stretch, sealing the game on a big run. I am very intrigued to watch both players over the rest of the 2026 season.
- James Briggs was impressive in coverage for Columbus. He nearly had an interception and provided great coverage consistently.
- For Bishop Gorman, Jason Lawrence and Calvin Lea’Ea were impressive in the trenches. Brayley Manning provided some nice coverage, while Pesi Silva made some great plays throughout the game.

Bishop Gorman is set to travel to Utah to face Lone Peak, while Columbus returns to Fort Lauderdale to face St. Thomas Aquinas.
