Head coach Brian Hartline and South Florida announced the Bulls’ six team captains ahead of this week’s season opener against the Florida International University Panthers. 

The captains were selected by a team vote, led by Florida transfer linebacker Grayson “Pup” Howard, who was the leading vote-getter. He will be joined by quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr., offensive lineman Caleb Cook, offensive lineman Thomas Shrader, defensive lineman Major Dillard, and edge rusher C.J. Hicks.

Shrader, who started all 13 games last season, is the only returning player among the six captains selected, highlighting the roster turnover under Hartline as five newcomers were selected to lead the team.

Howard receiving the most votes from his teammates is notable as he has only been with the team for the offseason after transferring from Florida. His selection from the team shows his immediate impact and respect that he has gained in a short time.

Van Buren Jr. was named the Bulls’ starting quarterback last week after competing with Luke Kromenhoek throughout camp. Hicks is a high profile talent who transferred from Ohio State. He earned a five-star rating out of high school and will look to be a big contribution to the pass rush. 

The Bulls will take on FIU on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium to kick off the 2026 season.
