It is not often that an instant classic happens early in the season, but on Friday night, American Heritage and East St. Louis did just that.
In a thriller that lasted until overtime, the Patriots escaped with a 35-28 win over the Flyers. There were plenty of great offensive plays in this game, as well as key defensive plays that caused the momentum to swing. It was a game truly worthy of the Broward National High School Football Showcase, and it showcased the talent on two of the better high school teams in the country.
Who made their mark in this game? And how did the events of this game transpire? All of that, and more, will be answered! It is time for another New Era Prep postgame recap!
The American Heritage Offense Arrives
After a poor start to the 2026 season against West Boca, the American Heritage offense truly found its footing against East St. Louis on Friday night.
Tremaine Mullen impressed at running back early in the game, scoring a touchdown and having multiple great runs for the Patriots. His vision, burst, and speed all looked even better from last week, where he first flashed as a player. Richard St. Julien, a 2030 prospect, and Marcus Smith, a 2027 prospect, had some nice carries and touches throughout the game as well.
However, the true catalyst for American Heritage’s offensive success was the passing game.
Neimann Lawrence was locked in all night for the Patriots, showing off his elite skill set consistently. In the pocket, Lawrence was decisive and accurate. He got through his reads effectively and delivered great passes to his wideouts, allowing them to make big plays. Two key passes that stood out early in the game were when he connected with Kobe Conway and Jeffrey ONeal, allowing them to make plays in space. Lawrence did not make those types of throws against West Boca; the quarterback seemed way more comfortable in the Patriots’ second game.
Most impressively, though, was what Lawrence did outside the pocket. The Texas commit threw multiple strikes on the move, avoiding pressure and hitting his wideouts perfectly in stride. He did this with Michael Stringer (more on him shortly) and with Trae Proctor on multiple occasions. Lawrence’s best play of the night came deep in the red zone; under pressure, he channeled his inner Derek Jeter and hit a perfect jump pass to Proctor for a touchdown.
As much as Lawrence was vital to American Heritage’s win, the Patriots likely would have lost this game without the contributions of wideout Michael Stringer.
Lawrence’s favorite target on the night, the Western Kentucky commit had three touchdowns and looked like one of the best players on the field. He showed off great route running, hands, and play strength. He showed off impressive speed, which was full on display when he ripped off a 70+ yard touchdown by outracing the East St. Louis defense. He caught what ended up being the game-winning touchdown in overtime. Stringer was simply phenomenal on Friday night in a performance that should bring plenty of eyes to him in 2026.
Heading into some tough matchups on their schedule, this is exactly what American Heritage needed.
It was not a perfect game for the offense against East St. Louis, especially considering the fact that they narrowly avoided some turnovers. However, the Patriots did plenty of great things on Friday night against an upper-level opponent. They showed the immense skill and talent they have at every position, especially at wideout and quarterback. The Patriots, if their offense executes like this, are in store for a great 2026 season. It will be very intriguing to see how they build off this game against Chaminade next week.
East St. Louis Shows Tremendous Fight on Offense
Even in a loss, the East St. Louis offense was very impressive against American Heritage.
At quarterback, Reece Shanklin truly took his game to another level in the second half for the Flyers. He churned out multiple big gains with his legs, forcing missed tackles and having the awareness to avoid big hits. Yet, Shanklin also knew when to lower the shoulder, which he did on his touchdown run to make the game 28-14.
Shanklin also made some of the best pure throws of the entire game. In the second half alone, he delivered a perfect pass to Jamarion Flowers to set up the team’s first touchdown of the game. Shanklin also uncorked two perfect throws to Laron Baker Jr., the second of which was a key touchdown in East St. Louis’s comeback efforts. In the face of so much adversity, I was truly impressed by what Shanklin did at quarterback in this game. He is definitely a player I am keeping an eye on.
In terms of playmakers, Laron Baker Jr. showed off his speed and overall pass catching all night for the Flyers. Jahmori Ware made a few nice plays for the Flyers in this game. Jamarion Flowers was impressive as well for East St. Louis; the wideout consistently made plays through contact and was very difficult for American Heritage to bring down to the turf. Flowers even made a contribution on defense, notching an impressive pass breakup at the line of scrimmage.
The best overall weapon for the Flyers, though, was Ronnie Gomiller. A senior committed to Cincinnati, Gomiller was a problem to take down in the open field. His speed was evident on run plays or passing plays; whenever he touched the ball, good things happened for East St. Louis.
I loved how the wideout, who also took snaps at running back, was not afraid to get upfield immediately, even with the athleticism he has. This combination allowed him to create chunk yardage, especially on his game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. Like his quarterback Reece Shanklin, I am very intrigued to follow what Gomiller does as the season goes on.
Defensive Stands Make the Difference
Whether it was American Heritage early in the game, East St. Louis late in the game, or American Heritage again in overtime, one thing was consistent in this game: the team performing better on defense swung the momentum in their direction.
In the first quarter of this gamw, the Patriots would have likely faced an early deficit if not for Rubin Ceasar III’s heroics. Getting a free shot at the running back after beating his block, the defensive end knocked the ball free and gave his team a critical forced turnover.
Ceasar III, along with Kaden Langford, Osneil Dillion and Micah Price, caused havoc in the trenches against East St. Louis, helping to keep them at 0 points going into halftime. Blake Mitchell and Ky’marlei Brown made some great plays in coverage, while Amare Nugent and Contreas Faison made good contributions as well.
Once the second half arrived, there was a slow-moving shift in the momentum of the game. It was not immediate, but as East St. Louis’s offense got rolling, their defense locked in as well.
Caleb Brown made multiple run stuffs on the interior of the defensive line for the Flyers. Aieron Bass flew downhill at the linebacker position to make multiple tackles, especially on the last American Heritage drive of the fourth quarter.. Phillip White had a near pick-six and made other key tackles for the defense, which were critical for the Flyers down the stretch. The Flyers’ offense will get all of the main headlines in this game, and for good reason. Yet, the team never is able to come back in this game without the defense stepping up.
And in a true full-circle conclusion for the Patriots in this game, the defense got that key stop when it was needed most.
On first down, defensive back Blake Mitchell was in the right spot to force an errant pass. Second down saw Ky’marlei Brown make a clutch pass breakup, while third down saw Rubin Ceasar III pressure the quarterback and force an errant throw, adding to his great day of work. Finally, the Patriots sealed the game on fourth down. On a play directly caused by pressure from defensive lineman Shamis Maura Jr., linebacker Jaytoin Thomas secured the interception to win the game.
Offense is always the aspect of football that grabs the headlines. For American Heritage and East St. Louis, it is a foundational element of their rosters and how they go about playing games. However, there is a reason that the “defense wins championships” cliché rings true in the sport today. The Patriots and Flyers, at different points of the game, benefited greatly from their defensive units stepping up. For both teams to be contenders in their respective states, that will have to be a constant over the rest of the 2026 season.
