Miami guard is staying in South Florida following standout year with the Canes
Former Miami Hurricanes point guard Tre Donaldson is staying in South Florida to begin his professional basketball career, as it was announced following the NBA Draft by ESPN’s Shams Charania that he would be signing a two-way contract with the Miami Heat.

The deal for Donaldson gives him the opportunity to split time between the Heat as well as their NBA G League affiliate team in the Sioux Falls Skyforce as he begins his pro career.
Donaldson transferred to Miami after spending his first three years of college at Auburn and Michigan, and quickly cemented himself as one of the best at his position in the ACC. The senior guard averaged 16.4 points, 5.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game and played a significant role in Miami’s historical one season turnaround from 7 wins in 2024-25 season to 26 wins in the 2025-26 season, including a win in the NCAA Tournament. Donaldson’s impact last season would earn him Second Team All-ACC honors.

Despite going undrafted, the opportunity for Donaldson to stay in his home state and be given the potential opportunity to play just 15 minutes from where he spent his final season of college basketball is extremely ideal for him. His defensive mindset and “dawg” mentality should fit well on a roster coached by Erik Spoelstra that features the best of the best when it comes to elite defenders such as Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, giving him an opportunity to continue getting better next to elite talent.
Donaldson will look to earn a spot on the main roster with the Heat while he continues to develop at the pro level. If he can translate the same winning mentality that he displayed during his time in Coral Gables, the former Cane can play a huge role in a Heat organization that is known for developing undrafted talent.
Good luck to Tre and continue to succeed!
