Travis Hunter played seven snaps on offense Sunday. He was not targeted on any of them. Despite having more snaps on offense, Hunter was less involved. In Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, Hunter played four offensive snaps but got two touches. Against the Broncos he was used exclusively as a decoy.
Defensively, Hunter got more snaps playing 37 of the 59, which accounts for 63% of available defensive snaps—up four percentage points from Week 1.
Hunter totaled four tackles and a deflection that forced a three-and-out on the Broncos’ first drive of the game, but he has been targeted only twice in two games. Hunter was also flagged for a 22-yard pass interference penalty that set the Broncos up inside the five where they scored a touchdown the next play.
On offense, Hunter was used as a decoy for all of his snaps. Head coach Liam Coen had him involved in several pre-snap motions to get the defense moving, but he was never targeted at any point in the contest.
When asked about his role on the team, Hunter said, “Coaches tell me what I got to do and I just follow their plan, follow their lead.” The two-way star played 37% of the snaps available to him on Sunday.
The Jaguars have been questioned by the media about the plan for Hunter, or lack thereof. Hunter averaged over 110 snaps per game during his time at Colorado, but with Jacksonville thus far Hunter’s snaps have gone down.
Last season, he averaged 69 snaps a game prior to his injury, but this year the snap count has gone down even further sitting at 44 snaps per game. Defensive backs Montaric Brown and Jarrian Jones share a rotation that the Jaguars have committed to thus far.
Coen said on Monday, “It’s just by drive with those guys rotating in. With Buster, Travis, Jarrian, and obviously Jourdan.” Buster is cornerback Montaric Brown. Coen later mentioned that it is similar to what the team did last year prior to Hunter’s injury and that this wasn’t anything new.
Hunter gets the reigning AFC Champions on Sunday, with the Jaguars trying to recover from last week’s loss where they led most of the way.
The verdict, two weeks in: It continues to appear that the Jaguars view Hunter as a part-time defensive player who occasionally has a few plays on offense. Certainly a far cry from his pre-draft hype, but it is still early in the year and Hunter is coming off an LCL injury.
