On Wednesday evening, former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron and LSU dropped the bombshell that he will return to the Lane Kiffin legacy staff as a special assistant to recruiting and defense.

This announcement sent shockwaves, but instantly connected one of the most beloved figures in school history and brought his championship pedigree back to Baton Rouge.

Orgeron’s legacy at LSU is already cemented forever after leading the Tigers to arguably the greatest season in college football history in 2019. Under his leadership, LSU finished 15-0, won the SEC Championship, captured the College Football Playoff National Championship and produced one of the most dominant offenses the sport has ever seen behind quarterback Joe Burrow.

That team defeated seven top-10 opponents and became the standard for modern college football dominance.

Beyond the wins and trophies, Orgeron built his reputation on elite recruiting and his unmatched connection and love to the state of Louisiana. His energy, personality and ability to motivate players made him a fan favorite throughout his tenure.

Kiffin specifically pointed to Orgeron’s recruiting ability and defensive intensity when announcing the hire, emphasizing the impact he can make in keeping Louisiana’s top talent home and the phone calls in his decision making process.

“The opportunity at LSU, as I said before, is just different. Someone very close to me reminded me this week of this decision, that LSU is the best job in football,” Lane Liffin said, referring to Coach O.

The reunion also makes sense considering the longtime relationship between Kiffin and Orgeron, who previously coached together at multiple stops during their careers. Now, LSU adds a coach who understands the culture, expectations and pressure that come with competing for championships in Baton Rouge.

For LSU fans, Wednesday’s announcement feels like more than just a staff addition — it feels like the return of a championship-era presence that helped bring one of the greatest nights in Tiger football history.
