TCU returns home Saturday, September 12, welcoming Grambling State to Fort Worth for the Horned Frogs’ home opener.

The Frogs enter the game looking to build some momentum after a 15-10 loss to North Carolina in Ireland during their season opener. Meanwhile, Grambling State faces one of its toughest challenges of the season against a Big 12 contender. The Tigers enter the matchup with a 2-0 record after wins over Clark Atlanta and Central State, giving TCU plenty of reason not to overlook this matchup.

The matchup marks the first meeting between the two programs since 2012, when TCU dominated Grambling State 56-0.

TCU’s offense enters Saturday with plenty of attention surrounding fifth-year quarterback Jaden Craig, along with several key playmakers. Jordan Dwyer who finished the 2025 season with 730 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns, steps into a primary role as one of the Horned Frogs’ top receiving threats. He will be joined by deep vertical threat Jeremy Scott, a transfer addition from South Alabama.

After scoring just 10 points against UNC, TCU will look to establish the run early with running back Jeremy Payne to open up opportunities for its playmakers through the air to hopefully build some in game chemistry before their Big 12 schedule starts. Payne was elected onto the 2026 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List after an admirable 2025 season, playing 11 games but only starting in 4, he still managed to total 5 touchdowns on 623 yards with multiple explosive runs of 10+ yards.

Grambling State’s offense presents a different challenge for the TCU defense, particularly with the Tigers’ physical, run-heavy scheme under head coach Mickey Joseph. A key piece of that offense is 6’5 310-pound offensive lineman Alexander Vigil. Vigil was named to the 2026 Preseason All-SWAC Second Team Offense and played a major role in Grambling State’s previous matchups, helping protect junior quarterback Reginald Johnson. Johnson has thrown a combined 391 total yards so far through 2 games on 82.5% completion. As a unit, the Tigers’ offensive line has not allowed their starting QB to be sacked through its first two games, showing the strength of their front.Grambling State also has playmakers on the outside. Jordan Bridge and Tyson George enter the matchup as two of the Tigers’ biggest offensive weapons after both recording receptions of more than 40 yards in their most recent game against Central State. If Grambling State can establish its offense early, it could force TCU into a more competitive game than expected.

The biggest question for TCU will be whether it can maintain consistency throughout all four quarters and turn its offensive opportunities into points. Craig threw for 175 yards in the season opener but did not record a touchdown. TCU fans will be looking to see the fifth-year quarterback get the ball into the hands of his playmakers and give the Horned Frogs’ home opener some pop.

With Grambling State entering as an underdog, the Horned Frogs cannot afford to overlook the Tigers or allow early mistakes. For Grambling State, the challenge will be slowing down TCU’s size and depth while creating enough offense to compete with a Big 12 opponent.

TCU enters the matchup with a significant advantage in overall talent, but Grambling State has an opportunity to make the game competitive by forcing turnovers and capitalizing on where TCU lacks. Expect the Horned Frogs to lean on their defense and rushing attack early before their depth becomes a bigger factor in the second half.
