Royal Palm Beach spoiled Palm Beach Central’s homecoming Friday night, handing the previously unbeaten Broncos their first loss of the season in a 14-0 shutout.
Palm Beach Central entered the matchup 5-0, but the underdog Wildcats leaned on a relentless defense to shut down the Broncos and improve to 5-1.
Most of the first quarter was a back-and-forth defensive battle until Royal Palm Beach defensive back Keyah Sunnyway intercepted the Broncos with just under five minutes remaining. The turnover set the Wildcats up in the red zone.
Royal Palm initially went three-and-out and lined up for a field goal, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty against Palm Beach Central gave the Wildcats a fresh set of downs. Royal Palm capitalized, with sophomore quarterback Matthew Coolman scoring on a QB sneak with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
Royal Palm Beach’s defense created another opportunity when Trenton Bell recovered a botched Palm Beach Central snap. Nothing came of the ensuing possession, however, as the Broncos’ defense clamped down and kept the deficit at seven.
Palm Beach Central’s defense came up with another big stop later in the first half. With Royal Palm Beach going for it on fourth down, Cyre Blake intercepted the Wildcats with just over three minutes remaining before halftime.
Royal Palm Beach carried its 7-0 advantage into the break.
The Wildcats’ defense continued to control the game in the second half. Samari Curry recorded Royal Palm Beach’s second interception of the night in the third quarter, keeping the Broncos off the scoreboard.
Curry struck again late in the fourth quarter, coming away with his second interception of the game and giving the Wildcats possession in plus territory with a chance to put the game away.
Royal Palm Beach did exactly that.
With just over two minutes remaining, Demetrice Rolle found the end zone on the ground to extend the lead to 14-0 and put the game out of reach.
The Wildcats completed the shutout to improve to 5-1, while Palm Beach Central fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with its first loss of the season on homecoming night.
Royal Palm Beach will now turn its attention to Palm Beach Gardens as the Wildcats look to keep their run going and continue putting Palm Beach County on notice.
