The United States Men’s National Team kept its World Cup dream alive Wednesday night, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in a dramatic Round of 32 matchup. Playing in front of a packed home crowd, the Americans overcame adversity, including finishing the match with 10 men, to book their place in the Round of 16 against Belgium. For much of the first half, the United States controlled possession and created several dangerous opportunities. Their breakthrough finally came just before halftime when striker Folarin Balogun found the back of the net after relentless pressure inside the penalty area. The goal was Balogun’s third of the tournament, continuing what has been an outstanding World Cup campaign for the Arsenal forward.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a controversial red card following a VAR review, forcing the United States to play the remainder of the game a man down. Instead of retreating, Mauricio Pochettino’s squad showed remarkable composure and defensive discipline, frustrating every attempt Bosnia made to find an equalizer. Veteran defender Tim Ream helped organize the back line, while goalkeeper Matt Freese came up with key saves to preserve the lead.

With Bosnia pushing numbers forward, the Americans delivered the knockout punch in the 82nd minute. Malik Tillman stepped up over a free kick just outside the penalty area and curled a brilliant strike into the net, sending the crowd into celebration and sealing a memorable 2-0 victory. The goal highlighted Tillman’s growing importance to the U.S. attack and capped off one of the team’s grittiest performances of the tournament. Although the United States celebrated advancing, the victory came with a price. Balogun’s red card means the team’s leading scorer will miss the upcoming Round of 16 showdown against Belgium, forcing Pochettino to adjust his attack for one of the toughest tests the Americans have faced so far.

The win marks another significant milestone for a U.S. team playing on home soil. Throughout the tournament, the Americans have displayed confidence, attacking quality, and resilience under pressure. Against Bosnia, they proved they can also win through determination and defensive grit when circumstances become difficult. Now, an even bigger challenge awaits. Belgium, one of Europe’s strongest sides, stands between the United States and a place in the World Cup quarterfinals. If the Americans can produce another disciplined performance like the one they delivered against Bosnia and Herzegovina, their dream of making a historic run on home soil may continue.
