The United States Men’s National Team has received a major boost ahead of its FIFA World Cup Round of 16 showdown with Belgium, as star striker Folarin Balogun has officially been cleared to play after FIFA suspended his automatic one match ban.
Balogun was shown a controversial straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review, a decision that would have normally ruled him out of the knockout match. However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee overturned the suspension under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, allowing the 25-year-old forward to remain available. The red card remains on his record, and the suspended ban would only be enforced if he commits a similar offense during a one-year probationary period.
Balogun has been one of the tournament’s standout performers, scoring three goals in three matches and leading the U.S. attack as the Americans look to reach their first World Cup quarterfinal since 2002. His availability gives Mauricio Pochettino’s side a significant offensive boost heading into one of its biggest matches in decades.
While the decision has sparked controversy, including objections from the Belgian Football Association, FIFA has confirmed Balogun is eligible to take the field when the United States faces Belgium on Monday night.
